Lumbar
Spine Degeneration - Justin Paquette, MD discusses human
disc disease
Physical
Therapy
Clark's
Passive Exercises -PT for post-op during crate rest. Check
with your vet or therapist which would be appropriate for
your dog. Dogs on conservative treatment should wait until
after 8 weeks of crate rest.

- Merlina
#1 around 9/15/04- - Walking in the kitchen two weeks
after crate rest was over for her1st herniantion (cervial
and lumbar, treated conventional). You can see her arched
back, how she positions her hind feet either too close or
too far away (and then corrects them), and how she sits
incorrectly with her legs spread forward. All are signs
of permanent neurological damage.
Merlina #3 Dec
2004- - Lying down; obvious signs of back discomfort, you
can see the arched back again. This is her second episode,
lumbar. Mild. Healed with conventional.
Merlina #5 Dec 2004
-- Showing neck muscle spasms. These have been happening
ocassionally after her first episode (cervial and lumbar).
Doxie Progresses
Each dog's degree
of injury to the spinal cord is different. Couple that with
the fact the nerves can be the slowest part of the body to
recover, it is impossible to put a time limit as to when a
dog might recover from paralysis and relearn to walk.
-
Sassy
-After completing conservative treatment with 8 weeks
of crate rest Sassy's nerves still continued to heal and
her legs re-learned how to walk five months later.

Rancho
- she had surgery on April 23rd. Is currently on acupuncture
therapy. Has bladder control, but no bowel control, and
this is how she moves.
Dixie
- 5 weeks after surgery.
-
Baron
- In the slow motion part you can see the neuro damage
from the disc herniation. But that did not affect his
attitude and love for life one bit.
Dakota
- Here is our Loenberger who had cervical surgery
and is recovered. This is a Powerpoint presentation.
