Success Story — Puddy

Success Story

Puddy

by Gale

This is my silly Puddy (Mud Pud) she hates to be dirty and loves having a bath and being clean. Not like her sister at all.

She has had two surgeries for ruptures and 3 conservative treatments.

She was completely paralyzed before and after the first surgery but has regained some deep pain sensation, she has come a long way. She refuses to use a cart, she relearned to walk but is still wobbly, has about 30% bladder control so I’ve been expressing her for the past 3 years which I definitely consider myself a champion squeezer at this point.

She loves life and having IVDD doesn’t stop her at all, you should see her go, she corners like a school bus on ice when she goes too fast but doesn’t bother her in the least.

We are blessed to have her, she is very vocal and makes sure to tell you what she wants or needs. She has a big personality and we love her so much! Thanks to Dodgerslist we have learned so much and are so thankful.

Many ways to success

Olive is an IVDD warrior

She loves all the different things her family does. She loves the beach. The hope is for all IVDD dogs to have as much fun with their families.

Ruby has been paralyzed since she was 4 years old

With a wheelchair accessory, nothing to stop this gal from joining in on winter activities!

There is good hope for all IVDD warriors to enjoy years of joining in with family activities. Many dogs do recover the ability to walk anywhere from weeks to a year whether after a surgery or with conservative treatment.

While waiting on more nerve repair to happen, dogs can use a wheelchair to play, have fun chasing balls, looking for critters, and going for walks. Wheelchairs are used for a few hours a day – not all day long. Padded garments help to protect when scooting indoors.

Clark’s wheelchair easily handles new fallen snow. For over a decade of summers his cart has made it possible to walk many a trail enjoying all there is to sniff.

Not Sure What To Expect About Quality Of Life?

YES, Your Dog CAN Have a Great Quality of Life!

True success with IVDD is measured by the most important goal of returning your dog to a pain free, happy and full-of-love quality of life after a surgery or from conservative treatment. Should paralysis occur, please know that dogs do not view the lack of ability to walk as a minus as humans do. Dogs adjust to what is and then get on with the business of fully enjoying all that life has to offer until nerves repair! Learn how to rethink things if you are struggling the quality of life question:

Wheelchairs are for living life while waiting on nerve function to return!  You never know where life will take you.   What is important to dogs is not how to get from point A to B, but that they can!

Which dog is not like the others?

“The three dogs on the right are all IVDD Survivors! Jake in the cart went down 3.5 years ago. Reggie to his right recovered from his latest bout only a month before this photo was taken last summer. Angel, my darling grand-puppy, was the first to be born with IVDD. I don’t know what I would have done without the knowledge we gained here at Dodgerslist”  ~Anne
